We are aiming to vaccinate and neuter 100 dogs in January/February 2022. It will be our first vaccinate and neuter project since the Covid-19 pandemic began. And we are super excited!
We will be working alongside Sneha’s Care in the Lalitpur district of Kathmandu. We have worked with Sneha and her team for a few years now and it made perfect sense to work with them again.
Whilst 100 dogs may seem a small target, we have to start somewhere right?! And that is still 100 dogs that will have vaccine’s and be neutered! They will have a better and happier quality of life following the treatment.
Neutering
Neutering is so important to help control the dog populations. In just 6 years, from one un-neutered female it can lead to 67,000 new puppies being born! This has a huge effect on the dogs, meaning that they have smaller territories, its harder to find safe food and clean water, more at risk of disease and injury. The only humane way to control dog population is through Catch, neuter and release programmes. Neutering also helps to prevent other illness and disease such as TVT’s!
Vaccinations
We will be giving the street animals vaccines for both distemper and rabies. Both diseases are deadly and it is so important that these diseases don’t spread.
Distemper is a viral disease that attacks a range of organs, and causes various symptoms. It spreads in the air, via bodily fluids and can live in the environment where the infected dog has been.
Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that damages the brain and nerves. It spreads via saliva and can effect any mammal including humans.
Both diseases are preventable with a vaccine, there are no known treatment and in most cases if an animal conducts the disease they usually die or end of with significant brain trauma. Humans can also have a rabies vaccine and it is important that they are vaccinated as well.
